Steelworkers Overwhelmingly Authorize Strike, Urge Goodyear to Bargain a Fair Contract

In a tremendous show of solidarity, the local unions representing 6,000 USW members at Goodyear have overwhelmingly authorized the negotiating committee to call a strike against unfair labor practices, if necessary, to fight for One Contract for All including the fair wages, benefits and working conditions that we have earned and deserve.

With 98% membership approval to authorize a strike, we urge Goodyear to come to the table and negotiate in good faith rather than engage in delays, meaningless rhetoric and demand unnecessary and unfair concessions from workers who have produced historic profits for Goodyear.

It is clearly in the best interest of everyone to resolve the outstanding issues through collective bargaining without a work stoppage, but Goodyear must change its approach before we can achieve a fair contract.

After two months of dragging its feet at the table and suggesting that USW members pay for proposed increases to health insurance costs, management clearly needs a reminder that workers are united against the company’s demands.

Our committee is thankful that the membership has spoken loudly and clearly with their vote to authorize a strike — WE DESERVE A FAIR CONTRACT FOR ALL NOW!

It's time for the top executives and managers to stop worrying about the price of their stock and figure out how to invest in the company's most valuable asset--the workers who built the company and keep it going.

With the authorization to call a strike, if necessary, we look forward to returning to negotiations and are confident that management has received the message from our shop floors. If the past has taught us anything, it's that without USW members, there is no Goodyear.

Unity – Determination – Solidarity
