Plant Closing Update
On September 13th Republic Steel informed the USW they were permanently closing their Canton OH, Massillon OH, Lorain OH and Lackawanna NY facilities. This has been difficult for everyone, dealing with the uncertainty of the future and how the closure would affect individual employees and their families.
Since the notice of permanent closure was issued to the Union, the USW has been communicating and meeting with the Company, trying to make sure that our members are receiving everything owed them through our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). As everyone knows, Republic Steel does not have a good reputation when it comes to making timely payments to their obligations of the CBA or to their vendors.
The Union has received a proposal from the Company to satisfy their obligation to their employees through the CBA. The Union continues to have discussions to make sure all of the Company’s obligations are fulfilled and payments are made in a timely manner. The USW expects to sign a final agreement soon. Once the agreement is finalized, individual letters will be sent to employees with instructions on how to get their individual payments.
