Union Offers to Continue Working While Bargaining Contract with Sherwin Alumina

GREGORY, Texas (October 1, 2014) — The United Steelworkers (USW) released the following statement today on the expiration of the labor agreement between USW Local 235A and Sherwin Alumina in Gregory, Texas. The agreement covering 450 hourly employees expired at midnight on Tuesday, September 30th.

“The union has offered to continue to work under the existing terms and conditions of employment while the USW and Sherwin Alumina continue to bargain to reach a new labor agreement. We have directed our members to continue to report for work as usual,” said Ruben Garza, Director of USW District 13.

“We are hopeful that the additional time will allow the parties to reach a fair contract,” said Ben Lilienfeld, USW District 13 Sub-District Director.

USW District 13 represents more than 50,000 members in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. The USW is the largest industrial union in North America, representing workers in a range of industries including metals, mining, rubber, paper and forestry, oil refining, health care, security, hotels, and municipal governments.
