Bangor, ME (Mar. 17) – The Maine Labor Council of the United Steelworkers (USW) District 4, today announced endorsement support of former state senator Emily Ann Cain as a Democrat for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District in the November general election.
The USW endorsement was announced by Duane Lugdon, staff representative for the union, who said: “Emily Cain has supported Maine’s working families without exception as a leading legislator in both the state house and senate.”

Lugdon said the USW members will be engaged in boots on the ground in neighborhoods and workplaces for an energized turnout to get behind her candidacy and name recognition for the November election. “Emily will take Maine forward to keep good jobs here by voting against free trade deals that promote imports and advocating economic development for infrastructure improvements to benefit us all. “
The USW in Maine represents more than 4,000 active and retired members at pulp and paper mills that are an economic mainstay of the state’s major industry, plus a diversity of other workers who service heavy construction equipment, manufacturing, petroleum transport and serve in municipal offices.
John Shinn, Director for the USW New England District 4 region, confirmed strong support. “We have listened to our union members, who have followed her leadership as a Democrat in the state legislature. She is the best candidate for Maine’s U.S. 2nd congressional seat. “Emily is a woman of steel who gives voice to middle class families and has proven vote-getting popularity by winning re-election in the state house and a state senate election in 2011.”
USW Local 9 President Patrick Carleton, representing paper workers at the SAPPI mill in Skowhegan and is president of the Maine Labor Council, declared: "We’re dismayed by the direction of Republican divisive politics in Maine and are enthused to support a Democrat who can unite us around issues that advocates economic security.”
Emily Cain, 36, has served in the Maine State Senate, 2012-14 and as a State Representative 2004-2012. She is a graduate at the University of Maine and has a Master’s in Education from Harvard University. Cain and her husband reside in Orono.
