USW Next Generation members participate in AFL-CIO YWAC meeting

Justin Willis, Marcos Velez and Robert Torkelson at AFL-CIO YWAC MeetingAt the Spring 2017 AFL-CIO Young Workers Advisory Council meeting, brothers Marcos Velez (District 13), Justin Willis (District 7) and Robert Torkelson (GMP) made us proud by leading discussions and facilitating workshops that focused on organizing, activism and developing new ways to get young workers more involved in our unions.

“As a member of USW Next Generation the tools I learned this week can be used to help me gain a more personal relationship with the members in my district that have not been reached yet, while assisting local union and district leadership in the challenges ahead,” said Willis about his experience.

Willis, Velez and Torkelson all sit on the AFL’s YWAC, which works on youth-oriented strategic initiatives and partnerships to help expand and strengthen the labor movement and build a just economy for all generations.

YWAC has a seat on the AFL-CIO General Board and advises the AFL-CIO Executive Council. You can learn more about the program here: https://aflcio.org/about/programs/next-young-workers/young-worker-advisory-council.
