U.S. Files USMCA Rapid Response Case Against Grupo Mexico

The U.S. government announced today that it accepted for review a petition against ASARCO’s corporate parent Grupo Mexico, under the Rapid Response Labor Mechanism of the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).

The petition, filed by the Mexican National Mineworkers’ Union (SNTMMSSRM), the United Steelworkers, and the AFL-CIO, comes under the rapid response labor mechanism of the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA).

It asserts that Grupo Mexico, which is owned by Germán Larrea, Mexico’s second-wealthiest person, is violating Mexican labor laws by using strikebreakers to operate the San Martín mine in Sombrerete, Zacatecas.

As we all know, when a company breaks the law to keep wages low in Mexico, it hurts workers on both sides of the border. It’s essential that we continue to stand in solidarity with the Mexican mineworkers and their leader, Napoleón Gómez Urrutia.
