March 20, 2020: Contract Negotiations Cannot Wait Indefinitely

Addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has understandably distracted both the union and ATI management from our bargaining—as everyone must stay especially focused on staying healthy and safe at work and everywhere.

However, there is nothing that should prevent the company from staying engaged with our union to resolve the outstanding issues in good faith for a fair contract, and there is no reason for management at certain facilities to practice “shadowing” USW members.

To that end, we have made it clear to ATI and provided them assurances that the USW will give the company enough time to shut down the equipment safely if we intend to engage in a labor dispute. Management has agreed to stop the shadowing immediately because of the assurances and because in some cases shadowing violates the stated COVID-19 protocols.

At several locations members have asked if the company can make changes to our health insurance after July 31, 2020. As long as we continue to bargain, no changes will be made to the current benefit programs. The company cannot change benefits or any other existing terms and conditions without first negotiating those changes with our union unless the parties have first reached a legal impasse.

Again, as always, we urge everyone to focus our keeping yourselves and each other safe, stay in touch with local union CAT and keep an eye out for future updates.

SOLIDARITY IS OUR STRENGTH
