(Pittsburgh) – United Steelworkers (USW) International President Leo W. Gerard and USW International Vice President of Human Affairs Fred Redmond released the following statement today to commemorate February as Black History Month:

“With the advent of Black History Month, we are reminded of the work and endurance of people who helped pave the way for us on the long road to dignity and respect in the workplace and in our society.

“We still have work to do to get there, but we take this time to pay our respects to black people who achieved and are recognized for their greatness, despite the obstacles that society placed in front of them because of their race. This includes the many black people in our union, and the labor movement, who came before us.

“We thank them for their selfless sacrifices, and we are committed to paying homage to their legacy by bearing the mantle in the continued fight for justice and equality for all. Our union welcomes all working people, without regard to race. We are committed to ensuring that all working people can have dignity and respect on the job, and justice and equality in our society. We know firsthand what we can achieve when we all stand together.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers in North America employed in many industries, including metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining, mining and the service and public sectors.  For more information: http://www.usw.org/.
