Next Gen in District 7 get out the vote with CBTU and APRI

Led by Sub-District 5 Next Generation Coordinator Ephrin Jenkins (EJ), USW Next Gen members in Gary, Ind. have been working with the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists’ (CBTU) Under-40 Committee and the A. Philip Randolph Institute (APRI) to register and encourage voters.

On Sept. 19, Next Gen volunteers joined Under-40 volunteers to recruit poll workers and get people registered at a community event in support of APRI’s Movement Day.

Then on Saturday, Oct. 3, EJ, Jawan Smith and Brenda English of Local 6787 and APRI, and Evelyn Resto of Local Union 12-775 held a voter registration drive at the local Save More Foods, where they also helped people check their voter status.

“There were people who were adamant that they were registered but let us help them check their status just to be sure; at least 3 had been purged from the voter rolls or labeled inactive and needed to update their registration in order to vote on Nov. 3,” said EJ.

The volunteers also encouraged people to vote early and informed them about mail-in voting.

EJ and the District 7 Next Gen'ers plan to do some canvassing closer to Election Day, and they are also teaming-up with CBTU again to participate in APRI’s “March4Voters” initiative, an in-person and virtual march to early-voting locations.
