USW Nurses Among Union Volunteers Headed to Puerto Rico

From the USW

Three USW members, registered nurses at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., this week joined more than 300 volunteers who traveled to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to help with hurricane relief efforts.

Local 4-200 members A.J. Fitzpatrick, Kenni Soyinka and Esmeralda Valle will work with the Puerto Rico AFL-CIO and the city of San Juan providing medical assistance and helping fill Puerto Rico’s urgent need for highly skilled workers in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The 300 volunteers represented more than 20 labor organizations including the USW, the AFL-CIO, the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA), the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW).

United Airlines volunteered the flight to transport the workers to Puerto Rico, which also carried more than 30,000 pounds of emergency relief supplies.

There are thousands of USW members who were affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands who still need help.
