GÓMEZ URRUTIA EXPRESSES SOLIDARITY WITH STRIKE AT GRUPO MEXICO’S ASARCO SUBSIDIARY
The company uses illegal practices to avoid a settlement and trample workers' rights, he points out.
The President and Secretary General of the Mineworkers’ Union, Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, expressed his solidarity with the workers of Grupo México’s ASARCO subsidiary who have been on strike since October 13, 2019 in response to the company’s refusal to reach an agreement despite being accused of illegal actions by the National Labor Relations Board.
He pointed out that the almost 2,000 employees, who belong to eight international unions including the United Steelworkers, stopped activities at five copper mining and processing facilities in Arizona and Texas, where their rights are being violated by Germán Larrea, the owner of the company.
Among other deceptive practices, he said, the company representatives at the bargaining table lack power to take decisions, do not provide the information necessary to advance the talks, and push constantly for changes in working conditions.
The leader of the National Union of Mine, Metal, Steel and Related Workers of the Mexican Republic, reported that the NLRB complaint claims the strike was due to the company's unfair labor practices and therefore they are protected against permanent replacement in accordance with the current labor laws in the United States.
USW International President Tom Conway praised the solidarity of the union members at ASARCO and stressed that "our fight will continue until we have negotiated the fair and deserved contract that these men and women have earned."
The USW represents 850 thousand men and women employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto parts and energy industries, along with a growing number of workers in the public sector and service occupations.

La empresa recurre a prácticas ilegales para evitar un arreglo y atropellar los derechos de los trabajadores, señala.
El Presidente y Secretario General del Sindicato Minero, Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, manifestó su solidaridad con los trabajadores de ASARCO, subsidiaria de Grupo México, que se mantienen en huelga desde el 13 de octubre de 2019, ante la negativa de la empresa de llegar a un acuerdo, a pesar de que la Junta Nacional de Relaciones Laborales (NLRB por sus siglas en inglés) la señaló de realizar acciones ilegales.
Puntualizó que los casi 2 mil empleados que pertenecen a ocho sindicatos internacionales, respaldados por la United Steelworkers, pararon actividades y han estado en cinco instalaciones de procesamiento y extracción de cobre en Arizona (4) y Texas (1), ya que son objeto de los atropellos a sus derechos laborales por parte de Germán Larrea, propietario de GM.
Dijo que, entre otras artimañas, los representantes de la empresa que acuden a la mesa de negociaciones no tienen ninguna facultad en la toma de decisiones, no proporcionan la información necesaria para avanzar en las pláticas y permanentemente intentan cambiar las condiciones de trabajo.
El dirigente del Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores Mineros, Metalúrgicos, Siderúrgicos y Similares de la República Mexicana, refirió que la queja de la NLRB afirma que fue estallada debido a las prácticas laborales injustas de la empresa y por ello están protegidos contra el reemplazo permanente de conformidad con la legislación laboral vigente en los Estados Unidos.
El presidente internacional del USW, Tom Conway, elogió la solidaridad de los miembros del sindicato en ASARCO y subrayó que “nuestra lucha continuará hasta que hayamos negociado el contrato justo y merecido que estos hombres y mujeres han ganado."
El USW representa a 850 mil hombres y mujeres empleados en metales, minería, pulpa y papel, caucho, productos químicos, vidrio, autopartes y las industrias productoras de energía, junto con un número creciente de trabajadores en el sector público y ocupaciones de servicios.
