Welcomes SCA Tissue Contributions to
AFL-CIO Martin Luther King Holiday Observance
For Immediate Release January 18, 2008
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The United Steelworkers (USW) today praised the management of SCA Tissue North America (SCA) for the company’s participation in the AFL-CIO’s 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Observance, which runs through the holiday weekend.
The company has also donated an entire truckload of paper products to be distributed on Saturday’s exercise in community service. Salaried SCA personnel will distribute the donated paper products, and top management has been invited to speak at the conference awards dinner.
USW International President Leo W. Gerard called the union’s relationship with SCA Tissue a success story and added that he is proud that the USW/SCA partnership will be there visibly to honor the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. together.
“Our union’s partnership with SCA Tissue has proven that labor and management can accomplish much more when working together in the spirit of cooperation than we could otherwise,” Gerard said. “SCA management deserves tremendous credit for taking our partnership seriously enough to participate in the holiday observance – especially in Saturday’s community service themed events.”
SCA Tissue North America was honored last year by American Rights at Work, a nonprofit organization committed to advancing democracy in the workplace. The group chose SCA for its cooperative labor-management relationship with the USW that empowers workers. Beyond joint committees throughout the organization, SCA agreed to an adoption of a neutrality agreement with the USW. By working together with our members, the company has produced one of the best safety records in the industry as well as an exemplary environmental record.
The USW represents 850,000 workers in the United States and Canada employed in the metals, rubber, chemicals, paper, oil refining and other industries as well as the service and public sectors, including about 1,600 production and maintenance workers at eight SCA facilities in Alabama, Arizona, Illinois, New York and Wisconsin.
SCA North America, a subsidiary of Sweden-based Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget, is among the largest suppliers of away-from-home paper and tissue products in North America.
