John DeFazio was elected director of District 10 in 2001, and re-elected by acclamation in 2005. He began his union career as a member of USW Local 1843 at the former J&L Steel, and was only 29 years old when he was elected president of the 5,000-member local in 1970 — the youngest local union president in the history of basic steel at that time.

In 1977, John was appointed to the USW staff and subsequently promoted to Sub-district Director. He served as District 10 Civil Rights Coordinator, and has extensive experience helping workers in financially troubled companies. DeFazio has serviced locals in steel, can, manufacturing, glass, health care, municipal workers, and service-industry workers. He currently serves as Secretary of the union's negotiating committee for Allegheny Technologies, Inc.

Besides his work with the union, DeFazio was elected to the newly created Allegheny County Council in 1999 and served two years as its first president, representing 1.3 million people in the Pittsburgh area. He continues to serve on the council. He also serves as vice president of the Allegheny County Labor Council.
