David McCall began his union career with USW Local 6787 at Bethlehem Steel's Burns Harbor Plant in 1970, where he held various administrative, contract compliance and membership mobilization positions before being appointed to the union's International staff in 1986. In 1989, Dave was assigned as the Sub-district Director for then District 31, Sub-district 1 in Gary, Indiana, and in 1998 he was appointed Assistant Director for USWA District 7 (Illinois and Indiana).

Dave was appointed by the International Executive Board as the District 1 Director in January, 1999. He was elected to a full term as District Director in 2001, and re-elected by acclamation in 2005. He also serves as the Secretary of the USW Constitution Committee and chairs the union's negotiating committees for Mittal Steel; Republic Engineered Products (REP); AK Steel-Mansfield; Timken Company; Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel; WCI Steel; Ormet Aluminum; and, several other multi-plant bargaining committees.

Dave attended the Labor Studies Program at Indiana University-Northwest and graduated from the Harvard University Trade Union Program in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
