Steelworkers to Increase Strike Pay during Christmas
For Immediate Release December 5, 2006
Pittsburgh - The United Steelworkers (USW) has announced that, in addition to the weekly strike benefit provided for the more than 15,000 members on picket lines in the U.S. and Canada, it will pay an extra $100 per member for Christmas.
“This is another illustration of support for the people who are standing up for American workers,” said USW International President Leo W. Gerard. “Goodyear is a prime example of a how a corporation will use ruthless tactics to cut and gut domestic production and jeopardizes retirement security.
“This is a fight that all American workers are facing,” he said. “It’s a fight for industrial and health care survival in the 21st Century.”
In addition to union members at Goodyear, the increased benefit will also be paid to some 900 USW members on strike or locked out at other locations in the U.S. and Canada.
The regular strike benefit pays $100 a week through the eighth week, then increased to $115 starting with the tenth week.
