USW Commends US Trade Commission Finding Injury To Paper Industry Due To Unfair Imports Of Lined Paper Supplies From China, Indonesia And India
Affirmative Ruling Helps Pennsylvania Workers at MeadWestvaco; Roaring Springs Co.
For Immediate Release September 6, 2006
Washington, D.C. – Leo W. Gerard, International President of the United Steelworkers (USW), said today’s decision by the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to place tariffs on lined paper school supplies imported from China, Indonesia and India protects Pennsylvania production workers and properly enforces American trade laws.
The USW president said, “Our union-represented paper workers and their families got good news on placing tariffs against unfair imports. The ITC agreed that school notebooks, composition books, filler paper, and other school supplies are being illegally dumped into our markets, injuring American jobs and the paper industry. This decision should be a loud message that says enough.”
The tariffs of up to 250 percent will be fully implemented by the U.S. Department of Commerce, providing relief to 400 workers at MeadWestvaco’s paper plant in Alexandria, Pa. and more than 200 workers at Roaring Springs Blank Book |
