Steelworkers File Lawsuit to Reverse Alcoa’s Unilateral Change in Retiree Health Care

For Immediate Release                                              April 12, 2006

Pittsburgh - The United Steelworkers (USW) has filed a class action suit in Knoxville, Tenn., federal court on behalf of Alcoa and former Reynolds master contract location retirees who had their retiree medical benefits unilaterally changed by Alcoa in January 2006.

The lawsuit seeks monetary and injunctive relief on behalf of the adversely affected retirees, spouses, surviving spouses and dependents and an award of attorneys’ fees and court costs.

“Alcoa has just announced record profits,” said USW District 7 Director Jim Robinson.  “Alcoa has a contractual obligation to continue providing agreed upon health care benefits to retirees and their families who have given their work lives to building this company into the world’s premier aluminum producer.”

Robinson, who serves as the USW’s chief negotiator with Alcoa, said that union members are outraged over the company’s actions.
