Dick's Employee Council Home

The Dick’s Employee Council is a membership organization open to all non-supervisory employees of Dick’s Sporting Goods in Smithton, Pa. Both full-time and part-time employees are eligible to join.

Our organization is being formed with the help of the United Steelworkers (USW) to negotiate with Dick’s management on behalf of our members to gain positive changes in our workplace.

Our Council is not sponsored by Dick’s and is not related to the company in any way.

Something Seems Different
A New Approach to Building a Union

Over the past couple of years, employees here at Dick’s have been trying to form a union so that they can have a voice on the job. Support for a union continues to grow and a large percentage of employees continue to support the idea of having a union.

To this point, however, the level of support has not yet reached the majority level necessary to win a government-conducted election.

This time, something is different.

We -- as members of the Dick’s Employee Council -- are part of a fresh, new approach. We want to start out building an organization that represents only those employees who wish to join our council.

It’s simple, if you wish to have representation then join the Council. If you don’t want representation, then don’t join the Council. We only want employees to join the Council when they are ready to become members and if they want to enjoy the benefits of being represented by the Council.

Membership in our Council is completely voluntary.

What’s In It For Me?
The Benefits of Membership

With the Steelworkers’ help, the Council will represent us in matters relating to our jobs here at Dick’s. After a substantial number of Dick’s employees become members of the Council, the Council will request that Dick’s management meet and bargain with the Council on behalf of our members -- regarding wages, benefits and working conditions at the facility.

We will establish a system of stewards,  who we can go to with work-place problems. If Dick’s refuses to meet and bargain, the Council, with help from the Steelworkers, will take the necessary legal action to establish our rights to negotiate on a members-only basis.

In the meantime, here are some of the benefits we can begin to enjoy immediately:

  • The ability to join a Council committee, recieve specialized training and participate in Council decisions.

  • Special, members-only rates on goods and services available only to union members and their families, through the "Union Plus" program.

  • Confidential counseling on your rights in the workplace.

  • Access to a on-line job skills development center, which offers 1,600 courses that can benefit our families and our daily lives.
