Steelworkers Training Program
If the solidarity of a union is gauged by the participation and leadership of its members, then the strength of the union can be measured by the training and educational opportunities that are used to develop skills of its members. The United Steelworkers is proud to provide comprehensive union training programs to develop and enhance the skills of local union executives, activists and members.
- Leadership Scholarship The United Steelworkers has established a Scholarship Program aimed at developing and improving leadership skills among local union activists and officers. By establishing a USW Leadership Scholarship Fund with a substantial initial allocation, our Union is generating sufficient revenues to support the Program without "drawing" from the fund balance itself.
- Communications Communication skills are an essential element every activist must have as part of his or her standard tool set. These skills have to be developed and honed and should be added to, on an on-going basis. The United Steelworkers Communication Department and United Steelworkers Press Association are continually creating training modules to assist union executives, activists and members to improve communications at the local level.
- Other Training Options The United Steelworkers (USW) encourages all members to advance their educational opportunities. Two facilities endorsed by the USW include: the Institute for Career Development (ICD), which offers a unique workforce training program for eligible members. And the National Labor College (NLC), which offers union-building classes and can start members on the path to finishing their bachelor’s degree program.
