Engaging the Next Generation of Steelworkers
United Steelworkers (USW) New Media Director Connie Mabin spoke recently with progressive radio host Charles Showalter of the Working Family Radio Network about a new program introduced by the Steelworkers called Next Generation.
Mabin explained that New Media is all about using new tools to get the word out, to have conversations and share a message. It’s about reaching a next generation of young workers.
“Basically what it is,” said Mabin, “is our program to identify new members, educate them about our union and the movement in general, and help by giving them the skills they need to become the next generation of leaders in our union.”
They discussed why the program was being introduced and the initial reaction of young workers with the program.
“Now, unfortunately, with the challenges we are facing, with the clock rolling back with policies and anti-worker forces,” said Mabin, “we have this generation saying, ‘wait a minute, this isn’t right and we want a voice … a perfect time of a shot in the arm bringing some new blood into the union.”
