United Steelworkers to conduct study on mine safety
A grant given to the United Steelworkers (USW) will help fund a study on mine safety. The union received $600,000 from the Alpha Foundation for the Improvement of Mine Safety and Health.

2013 HSE Award Honorees
Last month USW Local Unions and individuals were recognized for their accomplishments in health, safety and environmental activism during the 2013 HSE Conference at the David Lawrence Convention Center and Westin Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pa. There were four different awards presented to numerous local union members.

Re-dedication Ceremony held in Heritage Park
On September 14, 2013, over 200 people gathered at Heritage Park to remember and honor those who lost their lives at the former Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point facility that is now closed. The Steelworker memorial that once stood in front of the union hall on Dundalk Avenue commemorates 118 steelworkers who lost their lives in accidents while on the job.

A Risk too Great, Hydrofluoric Acid in U.S. Refineries
Fifty U.S. oil refineries use large volumes of highly concentrated hydrofluoric acid (HF) as chemical catalysts in a process called alkylation. Alkylation creates additives that boost the octane of gasoline. On average, these 50 refineries each store 212,000 pounds of HF.a
