- June 06, 2013 Update on Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceuticals Act The Senate has their own version of this bill that does not include the electronic drug labeling requirement. The USW will work to address the electronic requirement problem during the conference negotiations to reconcile these two bills.
- June 05, 2013 House approves bill creating nationwide pharmaceutical traceability Language in the bill allows doctors and pharmacies to give patients electronically delivered directions on how to use prescription drugs. The paper labeling of these drugs would be gone and so would more than 1,000 paper jobs at mills in Maine that produce this paper. The bill still can be stopped in the Senate.
- June 03, 2013 Call Congress TODAY to stop Move of Pharmaceutical Labeling from Paper to Electronic: USW Paperworkers Would Lose Jobs It is urgent and imperative that you call your Congressperson TODAY and tell them to vote NO on the Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceuticasl Act, HR 1919. This bill would move pharmaceutical labeling from printed material to electronic only. This bill places thousands of USW jobs in the pulp and paper industry and American consumers at great risk.

Well over 70% of the delegates raised their hands. The group was then asked if any member at their facility had experienced a life-altering safety event. Every single hand in the room went up.

- March 31, 2011 The Paper Research Action Project (RAP) The sheer number of deaths and life-altering injuries in the paper sector led the USW to spearhead a groundbreaking safety survey that was the largest ever conducted in the industry. A team of member safety activists, USW technicians and leadership developed the survey and local union leaders and safety activists at 173 USW-represented mills completed it. The survey report, entitled Papered Over, put forth 7 key findings of underlying systemic causes of accidents in our facilities and includes recommendations for action.
