Many companies treat workers as a commodity instead of identifying them as a valued resource. The United Steelworkers recognizes the needs of working families - good jobs with living wages; some time off every week with a couple of weeks set aside every year for vacations; affordable health care insurance and a decent pension plan. In favorable economic times, our members work hard to increase the size of the economic pie. Our goal is to ensure our members get their fair share.
- On Labor Day, Work to Save the Middle Class America has commemorated two Labor Days since this brutal recession began near the end of George Bush’s presidency in December of 2007. Now the relentless high unemployment, the ever-rising foreclosures, the unremitting wage and benefit take-backs have replaced American optimism and enthusiasm with fear and anger.
- Dark Clouds, Gathering Storm A new report by noted economist Charles McMillion outlines the gathering storm facing our economy. Industrial output is plunging, producer prices are soaring and the housing industry continues to crater.
- Wage Inequality Growth Surges for Those at the Top While middle and lower income earners struggle against a weak economy, a declining dollar, soaring gas and food prices, those at the top of the income scale have reaped even higher wage gains because of, among other things, a surging inequality in wages.
- Report Places Majority of Middle-Income Families At Long-Term Financial Risk A recent report issued by the research policy group and an academic institute Demos, estimates that only about one-third of middle income families in the country are financially secure enough to remain in the middle class in the long term.
