This month, more than 30,000 oil workers from across the country are bargaining new labor contracts with the big oil companies. The biggest issue on the bargaining table is one that impacts us all—safety.
Over the past three years at least 18 oil refinery workers died on the job, dozens more have sustained life-altering injuries and countless others have likely suffered from chronic occupational diseases due to work-related exposures. But the industry’s reckless behavior doesn’t just impact workers inside the refineries. A major explosion at an oil refinery could destroy an entire community. Last spring the BP oil spill killed 11 people and created one of the biggest ecological disasters in history.
Join the January 21 National Day of Action for Safe Refineries and Good Jobs to help us get out the word about the fight for safe refineries. Get together with your local union or organization and stop by a local gas station and distribute informational flyers about the fight for refinery safety.
