(Pittsburgh) – United Steelworkers International President Tom Conway issued the following statement in response to White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy’s announcement that she will be stepping down:

“The USW wishes Gina McCarthy nothing but the best as she embarks on this new chapter.

“Gina spent her career advocating for sound environmental policies that also prioritize workers and their jobs – balancing regulation with the equally urgent need to keep manufacturing facilities open and maintain a firm industrial base in the United States.

“Her tireless work in the Obama and Biden administrations, as well as head of the National Resources Defense Council and a BlueGreen Alliance board member, helped countless workers and their communities address today’s concerns and prepare for a brighter future.

“As we look to both improve U.S. competitiveness and address climate change, we thank Gina for setting a strong example and reminding us of what we can achieve when we work together.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.
