The United Steelworkers (USW) today said that the union has endorsed Phil Murphy in his campaign to become the next governor of New Jersey.
USW District 4 Director John Shinn said Murphy would be an ally to Garden State middle class families with his commitment to preserving American manufacturing jobs and by supporting unions instead of undermining the ability of workers to organize and bargain collectively.
“Phil Murphy earned our endorsement with his strong support for ‘Buy American’ laws and his opposition to so-called ‘right-to-work’ legislation,” Shinn said. “New Jersey’s working families deserve an advocate who will fight for them, and we have faith that the Murphy administration will do exactly that.”
Shinn said that Murphy understands and appreciates the diversity of USW members in New Jersey, who work in a wide variety of industries and occupations, from health care to construction, pharmaceuticals, paper, glass, oil and transportation, as well as workers in the public sector.
New Jersey’s primary elections will take place on June 6, 2017, when both Democrats and Republicans will choose candidates for the general election on Nov. 7, 2017, when voters decide who will succeed Gov. Chris Christie, who has reached his term limit.
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
