(Columbus, Ohio) -- United Steelworkers (USW) District 1 announced today that it has endorsed State Senator Nina Turner (D-Cleveland) to be the next Ohio secretary of state.

“Jon Husted has continually used his office to suppress the rights of Ohioans to vote, from limiting the days and hours of early voting, to blocking weekend voting,” said District 1 Director David McCall. “He’s also placed burdens on voters for mistakes written on provisional ballot forms … the list goes on and on.”

“With Nina Turner, we have a champion of the people and a candidate driven by the belief that elections should be pro-voter and that voting in Ohio should be more expansive, modern and convenient,” said McCall.

USW International President Leo W. Gerard also expressed his support for Sen. Turner. “According to the GOP, some Americans, especially those who disagree with them, are sub-citizens who don’t deserve fundamental human and political freedoms protected by the U.S. Constitution,” said Gerard. “We support Nina Turner because electing her as Ohio’s next secretary of state is one of the first steps in our journey to win back the rights of voters and workers across this country.”

USW District 1 represents some 70,000 members in Ohio, including hospital employees in Akron, paper mill workers in Chillicothe, nuclear services workers in Piketon, oil refinery workers in Toledo, Suncoke plant workers in Haverhill, tire makers at Goodyear, Firestone and Cooper, and steelworkers and public sector workers around the state.
