USW members’ goodwill earns International union top community award

Members across the United States and Canada have gone above and beyond the call to action to help those on the front-lines who are working every day as heroes as well as others in their communities who are struggling during the coronavirus pandemic. This dedication to service has earned the USW the Multiplying Good One In a Million Award.

Multiplying Good, formerly known as the Jefferson Awards Foundation, offers a powerful continuum of training, activation and recognition to bring more people into service and magnify and scale their efforts.

Steelworkers in all sectors have always been known for their quiet generosity in their neighborhoods, and members have stepped up tenfold during this trying time by collecting food for local pantries, making and donating masks and other PPE to health care workers, providing meals to those on the front lines, and so much more.

USW Vice President Fred Redmond, who oversees the union’s health care sector, including the Health Care Workers Council, said this honor shows that the heart of the Steelworkers is stronger than ever.

“Our members show time after time that through struggle can come great solidarity and community,” he said. “They always find a way to come together, and everyone should be proud of what they are accomplishing in the face of these challenges.”
