Greater Syracuse Labor Council Honors WOS Julie Searle

Congratulations to Julie Searle of Local 955, District 4, for being honored by the Greater Syracuse Labor Council who gave her the 2016 Charley Bugnacki Community Service Award.  Charley Bugnacki was a 30-year member of CWA and a 28-year liason between the community and the United Way.  This award, created in honor of Charley, is bestowed upon union members who do exceptional work in their community.Julie Searle

Julie works at Packaging Corporation of America in Liverpool, N.Y., but was formerly with Crucible Steel for 21 years and served Local Union 1277 both as Financial Secretary and on its Grievance Committee. She currently holds the Chair of the Central New York Women of Steel Committee and has helped organize many WOS fundraisers over the past few years.  Julie is always one of the first people to volunteer to support our union and worthy causes in the community.  She has stepped up in many ways as an activist and was acknowledged for the following projects accomplished through the Women of Steel this past year:

  • Julie reached out to the women’s shelter at the YWCA to see what they needed. They told her clothing appropriate for job interviews, so she brought the idea to the WOS committee. As a result, the “Dress for Success” clothing drive was organized.
  • After hearing from a family friend that there were babies in need, she helped organize a diaper drive.
  • Participated with WOS, SOAR and Next Gen in the meatball cook-off for the United Way.
  • Organized a “Helping Hounds” fundraiser for a local animal shelter and delivered a truckload of needed supplies.
  • Helped to collect and deliver backpacks and school supplies for union brothers and sisters on strike.
  • She helped organize “Operation Bundle Up” and collected and delivered pick-up trucks of coats and warm weather gear for veterans

We couldn’t be more proud to have a woman like Julie representing the Steelworkers and the Women of Steel.
