USW Cares: Cindy Marlow of Local 3609 to be Recognized with Jefferson Award

The term “jack of all trades” could not apply more to someone than it does to Cindy Marlow, District 4’s Jefferson Award winner.  As an active member and president of Local 3609, Cindy’s service record includes helping the homeless, getting people politically involved, and volunteering with disabled and underprivileged children.

Over the years, she has taken part in various food drives and clothing collections for the Response to Love Center and the Food Bank of Buffalo, NY, organized multiple voter registration drives, volunteered at Cradle Beach Camp for disabled and underprivileged children, collected socks, hats, and mittens for the patients in Buffalo Women & Children's Hospital, and sponsored a Holiday Extravaganza at the Matt Urban Hope Center for children and their parents to enjoy.

Cindy’s Women of Steel committee also brought a seasonal ‘Scarf Tree Wrapping Event’ to Buffalo.  Steelworker volunteers, with the Matt Urban Hope Center and the Thankful Baptists Church, encourage people to donate scarves during the cold-weather months that they, then, wrap around trees in the area for anybody who is struggling outside to take when they need it.
Of course, it doesn’t stop there. Cindy also has many leadership positions including, but not limited to, Local Union President, WOS Western NY Regional Council Chair, Delegate to the AFL-CIO and Buffalo CLC, Chair of Rapid Response Local Committee, Recording Secretary for the District Legislative Council, and member of both the National CLUW (Coalition of Labor Union Women) and WNY (Western New York) Chapter, as well as the United Way Women's Leadership Advisory Board.

For Cindy, nothing could make her happier:  “The more involved I became in the union, the more my eyes were opened to the real world,” Cindy said. “I am blessed to have a decent job with good benefits and I think it is only right to give back and help those who need it.”

Her hard work and dedication do not go unnoticed. District 4 Director John Shinn is more than pleased to call Cindy a USW member and knows the people she has helped are just as honored.

“Cindy has helped make the city of Buffalo a neighborly place,” Shinn said. “She never turns her head to a person in need. District 4 is proud to have Cindy Marlow represent our members and our local community.”
