District 10 Town Hall Meetings Educating Local Citizens on the Dangers of TPP

District 10 Rapid Response Coordinator George Piasecki knows that educating the public on upcoming political issues that threaten American workers is the key to getting people involved in the fight against such legislation. Under the leadership of District 10 Director Bob McAuliffe, Piasecki along with his band of Steelworker Congressional Coordinators recently organized a series of Town Hall meetings and rallies across Pennsylvania to inform local citizens of the dangers of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP. The TPP is a proposed trade agreement between the U.S. and 11 other countries that, if passed, will result in massive job losses, environmental damage, skyrocketing prescription drug prices, and other devastating effects on working families across the country.

"This is about our families, our communities and our jobs" Piasecki told the crowd at the United Auto Workers Local 1872 union hall in March. Those same sentiments were echoed across the state over the last few months as the series of town halls continued.

The Steelworkers partnered with a variety of organizations and individuals in the effort to educate the public about TPP, including the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, Sierra Club PA, the PA Fair Trade Coalition, the PA Food and Water Watch, Keystone Catholics, the Citizens Trade Campaign and many more. The education about this reckless trade deal has garnered support by bipartisan lawmakers at both state and federal levels and local community leaders and officials.

“There is no doubt in my mind that this will literally destroy the middle class,” predicted Director Bob McAuliffe, “and the unions built the middle class.”

“There is not an industry or a commodity within this country, whether it’s service or manufacturing, that won’t be impacted by this Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement."

A big thank you to District 10 activists, their leadership and to all of our partners in helping educate District 10 workers about the dangers of passing the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
