USW Cares: USW Local 1219 Next Gen Members Conduct ATU Benefit Picnic

 ATU-Annual-01

ATU-annual-02This Saturday (Aug 22), United Steelworker members Mark Simko and James Cain, from Local 1219 Next Gen group, held the first annual Athletic Trauma Unit (ATU) Benefit Picnic in honor of its founder Chris Edmonds.  Around 60 people gathered at Boyce Park to recognize Chris’ commitment and contribution to the community through his program ATU.  Being very family oriented, the benefit had an egg toss, relay races, face painting for the kids and all the food made and donated by Chris’ mom, NeeNettia Edmonds.

ATU is a program that was created not only to get people in the community in better physical shape, but to break the financial barrier to health and fitness.  This program has become so much more and is all due to Chris Edmonds, the founder and CEO of the non-profit ATU.  The exercise program that he does throughout the community, all on his own time, has grown from just a group of people exercising to a family that inspires each other and works to make themselves and the community a better place.  Through motivational speaking, education of the youth in the community and volunteering his time, Chris has shown to be not only a good friend to the community but to the Steelworkers as well.

This project is just one of so many USW's amazing members do every day to give back to our communities and get involved with our communities. If you or your local are doing good things in your community, we want to hear about them. Let us know and share video and photos at www.usw.org/uswcares and use the #USWCares hashtag when you post your stories on social media. Don't forget to shout out @Steelworkers.
