USW Delivers Proposal to ArcelorMittal; Thousands Rally for Fair Contracts

This week in Pittsburgh, our negotiating committee presented a complete and comprehensive contract proposal to ArcelorMittal management that meets the needs of our members and retirees while saving the company millions in short term expenses and long term liabilities.

While the company has not yet responded, our committee remains focused on our goal of negotiating a fair agreement and remains available to meet for further discussions.

On Wednesday, August 19th, thousands of Steelworkers throughout the U.S. rallied and marched for a national day of action to send ArcelorMittal management the loud and clear message that we will not allow the company to use the current downturn in the market as an excuse to reverse generations of collective bargaining progress.

Thursday on the Iron Range, USW members from ArcelorMittal, U.S. Steel and Cliffs Natural Resources held a major solidarity rally, while our brothers and sisters at various other U.S. Steel locations concluded the week with events across the country on Friday.

Finally, the USW appointed safety and training coordinators joined our internal discussions to provide their knowledge and expertise on a wide variety of issues.

Our committee offers its sincere thanks to everyone who participated in this week’s activities and to our CAT representatives at all locations for their efforts to keep everyone informed and involved throughout this long and sometimes difficult process. With your continued support we will achieve our goal.
