(August 26) – Our USW bargaining subcommittees are continuing to meet regularly with U.S. Steel representatives in Pittsburgh this week in an effort to reach a fair contract settlement by the Sept. 1 expiration of our agreement.

Unfortunately, the company has continued its attempts to take advantage of the current industry crisis to pursue unrealistic, long-term changes to our contract that would negatively affect active employees, retirees and their families. These would include dramatic increases in active and retiree health care costs as well as changes to contract language covering hours, overtime and contracting out, among other concessions.

Meanwhile, our committee members remain committed to a realistic, fair settlement that will position the company for future success while protecting the decades of progress we have made at the bargaining table, progress that has built the middle class in our communities.

“We’re ready and willing to keep talking and keep working for as long as it takes to reach a fair agreement,” said International Vice President Tom Conway, who is leading negotiations with U.S. Steel.

We expect talks to continue regularly throughout the week and over the weekend, so stay tuned for more updates from your CAT coordinator.

Solidarity Events

We are planning massive solidarity events for Sept. 1 at U.S. Steel and ArcelorMittal headquarters. We are asking all USW members as well as their family and friends to participate to show the company that we will not turn back the clock. We will meet at noon at USW headquarters in Pittsburgh or at 3:30 p.m. at Local 6787 headquarters in Chesterton, Ind. For more information, click here, talk to your CAT coordinator or call 412-562-2382 (Pittsburgh) or 219-762-6787 (Indiana).

Keep Up to Date

As we approach the expiration of our current contract, solidarity and communication becomes more important than ever, so please keep standing together, stay in touch with your CAT coordinator for the latest information, or visit usw.org/steel for updates.

In Solidarity,

Your 2015 U.S. Steel Bargaining Committee
