USW Cares - Gate Collection Defies Tough News

Keewatin - When last Thursday’s gate collection got under way at Keewatin Taconite, Dan Pierce was a bit nervous.

“With the notices coming out that we may be laid off in May and the uncertainty of our facility at this time, I didn’t really know exactly how people would feel about doing a gate collection while not knowing,” said Pierce, who serves as president of U.S. Steelworkers Local 2660. “I was hoping for the best, and after seeing the number, I was happily surprised and very proud of everyone who works there.”

Keetac conducts a gate collection twice a year, two days during which those coming in and out the gates of the mining facility are asked to donate money to Neighbors Helping Neighbors, the food shelf located in neighboring Nashwauk.
