USW Cares: Steelworkers Helping Veterans in District 1

Submitted by Elva Martes

In 2014, United Steelworkers Local 6621 in Lorain, OH, held a charity golf event and conducted a 50/50 raffle to raise money to help our Lorain Valor Home to assist homeless veterans in our community. They collected over $1400 to help with the renovation to rebuild the housing facility which was in need of repair.

Valor Home supports veterans and their dependents in their efforts to achieve lasting self-sufficiency. Critical to this mission is the ability for individual veterans to find and retain permanent housing.

Pictured below is the Financial Secretary of USW Local 6621, Elva Martes, presenting the Valor Home representatives with a check at the Lorain County Veteran's Reunion Event. #USWWorks

This project is just one of so many USW's amazing members do every day to give back to our communities. If you or your local are doing good things in your community, we want to hear about them. Let us know and share video and photos at www.usw.org/uswcares and use the #USWCares hashtag when you post your stories on social media. Don't forget to shout out @Steelworkers!
