Rick Smith Interviews USW Oil Workers Jim Savage and Norm Rogers

President of United Steelworkes Local 10-1 Jim Savage gives Rick the latest on the Steelworkers' nationwide strike that has moved into day 18.

They discussed the unions role to try to bring potential hazards to the attention of management so they can address any problems. Savage talked about presenting a lean and achievable agenda that dealt with worker fatigue, staffing - which ties into the issue of fatigue, contracting out work, training and health care costs.

Negotiating Committee member with United Steelworkers Local 675, Norm Rogers, talked about the oil refinery explosion in California and the need for safer workplaces.

Rogers did not want to speculate on what happened but he pointed out that with most accidents there are multiple things could have failed. He said it is terrible when these accidents and injuries occur but this incident does highlight the need to address hazards before they happen.

This is an unfair labor practice strike which occurred because of the oil companies’ failure to bargain in good faith, including their failure to bargain over mandatory subjects, to provide information relevant to bargaining, threats of reprisals against strikers and unlawful surveillance.
