Daughter of USW Member Recognized with a Jefferson Award

kadence3Here’s a true Next Generation of Steelworkers story: 10-year old Kadence Simko, daughter of Mark Simko from United Steelworkers Local Union 1219 was presented with a Jefferson Award medallion on May 4 at one of Pittsburgh’s biggest gatherings of community service volunteers. Forty-six honorees were recognized this year for their service, including retired Pittsburgh Steelers play Charlie Batch.

The national Jefferson Awards program was launched in 1972 by the American Institute for Public. Six years later, in 1978, the program was started in Pittsburgh. The purpose of the Jefferson Awards is to highlight the idea that one person can make a difference.

Kadence was instrumental last year in helping the members of her dad's local union and their Next Generation group to collect 75 bikes, 10 scooters, five skateboards and many helmets, pads and bike parts that were donated to children in the Braddock community. The local, under Kadence’s leadership, expanded the effort this year – just this past weekend delivering truckloads of bikes for area kids. Watch a video below about this effort.

She recognizes the importance of community service and enjoys helping others in her community. She is continuing to assist her father, the members of Local 1219 and children in Braddock.
