ArcelorMittal’s Medicare Exchange Brokers Cannot Improve Profits or Healthcare

Our meetings with ArcelorMittal continued this week. While we are still working on an appropriate response to the company’s opening demands to slash our compensation and benefits, we have also presented the company with a series of non-economic proposals aimed at improving our existing contract language on several issues.

This week, the company brought in two more vendors to explain how their brokerages use the Medicare Exchange to provide benefits to retirees. After three presentations from three separate vendors, our committee is convinced only that the company’s drive to provide less medical coverage at a higher cost is a proposal that will not meet the needs of current or future USW retirees.

On Thursday, July 30, our negotiating committee participated in a march from International Headquarters to the corporate headquarters of ATI for a rally to support more than 2,200 USW brothers and sisters who have remained on their jobs at 11 facilities since their contract expired June 30, 2015, while at the table our union continues to fight the company’s relentless attempts to undermine decades of progress achieved through collective bargaining.

Our strength remains to be the unity and solidarity of Steelworkers across all ArcelorMittal locations, and we are proud to represent you in these negotiations. We are positive that your continued support will enable us to negotiate the fair contract we have earned through many years of hard work and sacrifice.

Next week, we will be prepared to engage management again with more proposals of our own as the process continues to unfold.
