USW Local 1117 Members Rally for Their Families and Better Conditions

USW Local 1117 members rallied outside the RockTenn corrugated box plant in Mishawaka, Indiana, on Monday, April 21, 2014 to protest mandatory overtime and other work issues like the company’s desire to unilaterally change work rules.

Members carried signs such as, “Fix the Ventilation, Rain & Fog Belong Outside,” “Fair Contract,” “United We Stand,” and “RockTenn Not Family Friendly.” Members brought their children to the rally, and one member’s two young sons held signs they made saying, “We Want to See Our Dad More.”

Instead of hiring more people to cover employee absences, RockTenn requires workers to put in four extra hours of overtime if their replacement on the next shift fails to show. Excessive overtime can lead to employee fatigue and a greater likelihood of accidents occurring.
