NEWPORT NEWS — Last fall, the head of the largest union at Newport News Shipbuilding requested a meeting with management to address security issues after the Sept. 16 mass shooting at Washington Navy Yard.
Twelve people were killed at Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters inside the yard when a contractor with a history of erratic behavior used his access to smuggle a shotgun into the building.
Arnold Outlaw, the president of United Steelworkers Local 8888, wanted to know what Newport News management was doing security-wise to keep its workers safe.
