In mid-November, the Gerdau Workers World Council held their global meeting in Brazil. United Steelworker (USW) members represented at this event included Ryan Emerson, Unit Chair of LU 9447-05 in Calvert City, KY and Pete Mandryk, President of LU 5442 in Selkirk, Manitoba.
In Brazil, unions are not allowed into the workplace even though they represent the workers there. They can, however, hold demonstrations/public union meetings at the plant gate.
The USW members met with workers at a Gerdau plant in Sorocaba. They also joined General Council members and flew a USW flag at a solidarity action in front of the Spanish Consulate in Sao Paulo to acknowledge the general strike in Spain. Council members found all the Brazilian workers very friendly and welcoming.
