A federal appeals court today substantially upheld a 2012 ruling that Carey Salt violated federal labor law numerous times during its negotiations with United Steelworkers (USW) Local 14425 at the company's mine in Cote Blanche, La.

Women of Steel in District 13 Exchange Information, Share Ideas, and Build Solidarity
In mid-October, United Steelworkers Women of Steel in District 13 held a four-day Leadership Development course in Dallas, Texas. Forty-seven delegates from 21 different locals throughout Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, and Louisiana attended to discuss workplace safety and health, how the union works, and forming Women's Committees.

Congratulations to USW Locals 1329 and 13-1327
At the Health, Safety and Environment Conference last month, the USW Locals 1329 and 13-1327 at Domtar in Ashdown, AR won the A.Q. Evans Award for a model hazard mapping initiative at the Domtar Paper Company in Ashdown, AR. The initiative has led to the correction of numerous hazards, empowered USW members in the mill, and has spread to other locations within the paper industry.

Arkansas Steelworker activists meet with U.S. Senator Mark Pryor
Seventeen Steelworker activists representing Locals 369, 602, 752L, 884L, 1329, 1731, 13-1327 and 2 SOAR Chapters met with US Senator Mark Pryor in Little Rock on September 20th, concerning issues that are important to working men and women. We discussed his votes on past trade agreements and the need for the TPP negotiations to be more transparent.

On Monday, September 9, 2013, during a routine filter change at the Alcoa Point Comfort, TX operations, 4 bargaining unit employees and a supervisor were injured. Mike Brown, a 1 year member, received severe caustic and heat burns and had to be airlifted to the burn unit at UTMB Galveston.

Forever Stamps Honor America’s Industrial Workers

District 13 Women of Steel Back in Oklahoma
Jackie Boyce and Thelma Howard made the trip back to Moore, Okla, to deliver the Women of Steel handbags to women that lost their possessions in the recent tornadoes. The Women of Steel collected purses at their WOS conference earlier this year and stuffed them with toiletries and things that a lady would need after losing everything during a natural disaster.

District 13 WOS Answer the Call to Assist Tornado Victims
On May 20 2013, a devastating tornado hit Moore, Okla., killing 24 people, including 5 members from union families, and injuring dozens of others. The Oklahoma AFL-CIO identified 1054 members that were affected, with 274 homes damaged but livable, and 105 other members that had total destruction of their homes.

USW Study Warns Public about Dangers of Hydrofluoric Acid Use in Refinery Alkylation Process to Produce Clean-Burning Gasoline
A United Steelworkers (USW) study released today-"A Risk Too Great, Hydrofluoric Acid in U.S. Refineries"-warns that refiners that use hydrofluoric acid (HF) in their alkylation process to make clean-burning gasoline do not have adequate safety systems in place and are not prepared to handle a release.
