President’s Perspective

Donald Destructo

Donald Trump has perfected the swagger and boast of a professional wrestler.

While a guy like World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Vince McMahon is full of fake bluster and brashness for the sake of TV ratings, Donald Trump is the real McCoy: A reckless bully.

That violent, provocative behavior makes Trump far too dangerous to get anywhere near nuclear codes. For Americans who want peace and security, not war, this man is too risky to inhabit the White House.

That’s what 50 former national security officials whose careers span more than four decades said in a letter last week. They are Republicans. They include a former director of the CIA, the first director of national intelligence, and two former secretaries of homeland security. They warned Trump would be treacherous as president.

And that was before Trump suggested in a speech last week that “Second Amendment” supporters assassinate Hillary Clinton if she’s elected so she can’t nominate judges to the Supreme Court.

Rock Against TPP Drawing Large Crowds

Dave Johnson

Dave Johnson Fellow, Campaign for America's Future

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is revving up for a vote in the “lame duck” session of Congress that follows the election, and the Rock Against the TPP Concert Tour is drawing large crowds. Awareness of TPP drives opposition, and Rock Against the TPP is doing its part to drive awareness.

Awareness Drives TPP Opposition

A July survey by Democracy Corps shows that Americans are generally unaware of TPP, but when they learn about it, a majority is opposed to it. While people initially think of “trade” in a generally positive way, the more people learn about TPP and other “trade agreements” the more they shift to opposing them.

After hearing a balanced debate – including overall statements and specific arguments in support and in opposition to TPP – voters become dramatically less positive about the value of past trade agreements and much more pessimistic about TPP. Voters move from believing past trade deals are positive by 15 points to parity with those believing they are a bad thing, and voters shift from parity in the argument over TPP to two-thirds opposing it. Most importantly, 61 percent of voters are now eager to hold a Member of Congress accountable should he or she vote to pass the TPP when it is taken up.

Summary: Before hearing arguments both in favor and against TPP a majority favors it. But after hearing both sides, 2/3 oppose TPP so much that they say they will hold members of Congress accountable.

When is Daylight Robbery Not a Crime?

Jim Hightower

Jim Hightower Author, Commentator, America’s Number One Populist

I thought Donnie Trump and his fellow Republicans were big law ‘n order politicians. So, why are they trying to kill the sheriff and unleash thousands of robbers to run wild across America?

The sheriff they want to kill is the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The thieves they’re out to help are corporate debt collectors who pay pennies on the dollar to buy huge data bases of overdue bills – then hound the borrowers to pay up. They profit from weak regulations that let them bully, harass, rob, and run roughshod over tens of thousands of consumers every year – including people who’ve already paid off their debt or never even incurred it.

Every year, the debt collection firms routinely abuse the law and overload our courts by rotely filing hundreds of thousands of lawsuits against debtors. Masses of these suits are backed only by flimsy, out-of-date, erroneous, forged, or non-existent evidence. Collectors don’t care about the evidence, however, for their intent is not to win in court, but to frighten or bamboozle borrowers into paying.

Virginia Unionists Concentrate on Beating Right to Work Amendment

Mark Gruenberg

Mark Gruenberg Editor, Press Associates Union News

Amid reports that Virginia may soon be taken off the national “swing state” list in the presidential race and ceded to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Virginia unionists have decided to concentrate this fall on that campaign and on defeating a right to work state constitutional amendment referendum.

The Old Dominion is already a RTW state – which unionists call “right to work for less” – but only by statute. Right wingers in the GOP-run legislature want to enshrine RTW in the state’s constitution. RTW is a favorite right wing and big business cause, letting workers use union services without having to pay for them. There are now 26 RTW states nationwide.

To achieve success in Virginia, the right must pass RTW in two separate legislatures, with a referendum approval in between. The state fed will campaign for “No On 1!” – “1” is the ballot number of RTW this fall – state federation President Doris Crouse-Mays said.

“Virginia’s Constitution is a sacred document and does not need to be changed,” a state fed fact sheet on the RTW referendum says. “This amendment is simply the latest move in the partisan political trend to attack working families.

“Our Constitution was designed to protect the rights of the citizens of the Commonwealth. This amendment, however, is an attempt to enshrine an existing law designed to infringe upon the rights of workers and stifle our collective voices.

“Our state legislators should focus on policies that strengthen our communities, fund our schools, fix our crumbling infrastructure, raise wages, and create good jobs for hard working Virginians. This amendment is a distraction from the real issues and an enormous waste of legislators’ time and taxpayers’ money.

Ain't That Calling the Kettle a Bigot?

Sometimes, just when you think nothing more absurd could spill out of Donald Trump’s mouth, a minute passes, and you’re proven wrong.

Earlier this week, Donald decided that his opponent, Hillary Clinton, is just too much of a prejudiced woman for the American people.

"Hillary Clinton is a bigot who sees people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future," Trump said. “She's going to do nothing for Hispanics and African-Americans."

Yeah, sure, Hillary is the one demeaning minorities – unlike Trump, who honors them by taking photos praising Hispanics for their taco bowls, calling immigrants rapists and murderers, and courting white supremacists who show up to his rallies and beat and spit on black protestors.

Trump also claimed that Hillary and other Democrats are the reason behind poverty in black neighborhoods and that she hasn’t helped African-Americans at all.

“She doesn't care what her policies have done to your communities. She doesn't care," he nonsensically asserted.

Let’s just take a peek at what Hillary’s policies have done to those communities, shall we?
